Questions and Answers About our Curb Appeal Contest 2015
1) Why are we having a Curb Appeal Contest?
PHNA is organizing a contest to recognize those within the community that take pride in the appearance of their yard and do their part to beautify our neighborhood.
2) When is it being held?
March 1st to May 31st, 2015. We will be selecting a winning yard every week and placing a Yard of the Week award sign in their yard.
3) Who is eligible for the contest?
All single family residents within the Peter Howell Neighborhood including owners AND renters are eligible for the contest.
4) How do I nominate a yard?
You can email the PHNA board at phnaemail@gmail.com. Please ad the subject “Curb Appeal Nomination.” Residents may nominate their own yard or their neighbors as long as it is within the Peter Howell Neighborhood which runs from Broadway to Speedway and from Columbus to Alvernon.
5) What happens if the house I nominated does not win the week I nominate it?
The house will continue to be considered during the contest and may win in a subsequent week. There is no need to nominate it each week.
6) What is the judging process?
Each week, members of Curb Appeal Committee will judge nominated yards on Sunday evening and Monday morning when most yards look their best after the weekends work. Every week we will select the winner of the Yard of the Week based on the contest’s criteria.
7) What is the judging criteria?
We are judging based on six criteria, with a total of 100 possible points. The criteria are:
– beauty
– initial impact
– design & space planning
– color & harmony
– maintenance & neatness
– desert-friendly plants
– unique & interesting features
8) Will only nominated houses be judged?
Yes. Only a nomination is an entry into the contest, but anyone can nominate their own yard.
9) Who are the judges of the Curb Appeal Contest?
The judging panel is comprised of three members of the Curb Appeal Committee augmented by a weekly volunteer who will serve as a guest judge.
10) What can I do if I am interested in being a guest judge?
Anyone interested in being a guest judge for a one-week term, please email phnaemail@gmail.com with the subject “Guest Judge.” Guest judges will participate in the selection of the weekly winning homes and meet and congratulate the winners. Your perspective will enhance and diversify the selection process. Being a guest judge is also a great way to become more involved with the neighborhood, and the time commitment is minimal.
11) What happens if my home is selected as one of the winning yards?
A member of the BCA Committee will stop by to congratulate you for standing out from over 900+ residences in our PH neighborhood. All recipients of the Yard of the Week award will have an award sign placed in their front yard for the duration of the entire contest. With your written permission, your yard will then be professionally photographed. Your yard may also be featured in our Fall PHNA Newsletter, our blog, the Arizona Daily Star and other social media. On May 31st at 2pm at Alvernon Park, all 13 weekly winners will be eligible for the grand finale drawing to receive great prizes at the end of the contest. They will also be asked to show their winning yard as part of the celebration tour.
12) What if I miss the celebration tour?
If you miss the tour you are welcome to visit the Tucson Botanical Gardens and view a gallery of the winning homes which will be on display in their Educational Room during the months of June and July 2015.
13) If I do not want my home featured in any public forum whatsoever, am I still eligible for the Yard of the Week prize?
PHNA is trying to promote Peter Howell Neighborhood as a beautiful place to live where every neighbor is proud of their residence. This event is crafted to expose our best side to all of Tucson. For that reason, we cannot award houses that are unwilling to participate in the contest fully. If you are nominated, a member of the BCA Committee will present you with a nomination packet to make sure you understand the rules and that you are willing to comply. They can answer any questions you may have about being nominated at that time.
14) What can I win?
All winners will be entered for a final drawing to receive one of these beautiful prizes:
– a $250 gift certificate from Greenjeans Landscaping
– a $200 fused glass art sculpture made by local artist Israel Hoyer
– a $75 gift card for plants from McConnell Nursery and Landscaping
– a $75 pot with plants from Zona Fountains and Mar Designs
– a Wal-Mart El Con Mall $50 gift card
– a family membership at Tucson Botanical Garden
Your yard will also gain the prestige of having won the award, and will be professionally photographed by Carter Photography.
15) What happens at the end of the contest?
At the end of our contest, on Sunday May 31st, at 2pm, we will celebrate all the winners at Alvernon Park. We will have tips, suggestions and recommend contractors to show us all how to take care of our yards. All winners will be entered into the final drawing to receive one our great prizes provided by the PHNA Board and our sponsors. At the end of our celebration, neighbors will be encouraged to tour around our neighborhood and see the Beautiful Curb Appeal winners. We will provide a location map for the tour.
16) If I win this year, can my yard be selected next year as well?
All recipients of the Beautiful Curb Appeal Contest must wait two years before receiving the award again. If your house was nominated but didn’t receive a Yard of the Week award, you may enter the contest again next year.
If you have questions that aren’t listed, please email them to phnaemail@gmail.com. There is still lots of time to nominate houses. Email us and let us know who you think should win!
